About The Author

Carlos A. Garcia

Carlos A. Garcia

Carlos Adrián García was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 20 November 1960. Early on in his infancy, he showed a keen interest in aviation. And although he never studied drawing or painting, these two forms of art have been his hallmark ever since. His brilliant career owes his prestige to his natural talent as an illustrator and painter, coupled with his capacity of observation and endeavors to improve his technique through reading and practicing.

In 1983, Carlos García attended Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, where he studied aeronautical engineering and IT systems engineering, ultimately giving up both university careers in order to devote himself to illustration in full. Also in 1993, he graduated as a graphic designer. That same year, Massey Ferguson hired him to design their sales catalog.

In 1984, he joined the staff of Aeroespacio magazine as an illustrator. At the same time, he was hired to illustrate the English language edition of the Malvinas/Falklands War Encyclopaedia. Also in 1984, Carlos founded his own publishing company and launched Alas de América y del Mundo, an aviation magazine that had a very large readership. In 1985, the Argentine Army tasked him with the production of allusive sheets commemorating the armed force’s history. Other illustrator jobs included the Conozca Más, Descubrir as well as Buena Salud magazines.

He also held an industrial draftsman job with the Pampa’s Bull ultra-light aircraft factory, where he designed the manufacturing plans, parts manuals, and brochures. Meanwhile, his engineering studies allowed him to work as da raftsman designer in a number of metalworking industries.

Starting in 1986, he worked as a free-lance designer for Aerolíneas Argentinas, where he was tasked with illustrations, paintings, and exhibits through 2009. In 1999, he was in charge of corporate image production and the show daily newspaper for Aviation Show South America 99.

From 1996 through 2004, Carlos worked as an illustrator with the Post Office, holding the record of the most productive stamp designer in the history of the service. From 1998 to date, he produces commercial aircraft paintings of airliners operated by Airlines around the world on behalf of the US-based Sky Leasing corporation, which gifts them to airline CEOs and VIP members of the global commercial aircraft community.

In 2000, Carlos García won a competition to design the corporate image of Aerovip Airlines. In 2002, the Argentine Air Force entrusted him with the production of posters showing all the Argentine military aircraft that fought the Malvinas/Falklands war. His full production was destined for the armed force’s institutional website. Two years later, Helicópteros Marinos, an offshore helicopter operator, entrusted him with the production of a number of calendars marking the company’s Silver Anniversary.

Separately, the US Navy AIRPAC Museum in San Diego, CA, asked him to produce two paintings – one dedicated to Top Gun and one showing Naval Aviation Vietnam war ace Rundy Duke Cunningham. Furthermore, he did all the paintings, illustrations, graphic design work and photo production for the first two editions of the Alas de Trueno book, which tells the story of Argentine-born volunteers who became Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots in World War 2. In addition, he has done more than 360 illustrations for the Pulp Fiction book – a three-volume work containing all aircraft introduced in South America between 1930 and 1939. The book, expected to be released in Europe soon, has him as a co-author.

In 2009, Carlos decided he wanted to undertake another part of his professional development and began to study industrial design at Buenos Aires University, a career that he is about to complete nowadays. Also he doubles as Assistant Professor of Technology, sharing his knowledge and expertise with the new generations

At present, Carlos García works on request on behalf of private companies and collectors, Airlines and official institutions from all over the world. On 10 December 2020, the Day of Our Lady of Loreto, the Saint Patron of Pilots, Carlos earned his wings as a private pilot. Another long-time dream had come true.

Dan Hagedorn

Dan Hagedorn

Daniel P. Hagedorn is the author of over 18 aviation books —16 about Latin American aviation—and more than 260 journal articles for widely read aviation periodicals. He has been published in four languages, and he is an Associate Editor of Air & Space Smithsonian magazine. He was a founding member of the Latin American Aviation Historical Society and is a member of the Board of Directors of that international organization.

The decade of the 1930’s were turbulent in Latin America, with full-scale, nation-on-nation conflicts, internal strife and political intrigue rampant. All the while, the ravages of the ongoing world-wide depression saw many legacy aircraft design firms and manufacturers desperate to make sales to remain solvent. These factors merged to define Latin America as one of the few viable markets for sales, and the competition for these was often fierce, sometimes at the very fringes of ethics and in many instances engaged diplomatic maneuvering to make the sale.

But the aircraft involved were also, in many instances, near state-of-the-art, and with the lure of cash-on-the-barrel-head contracts, offers almost invariable exceeded the capacity of the market. The aeronautical press of the day, especially in the United States, followed all of this closely – sometime weekly – and serials such as “Flying Aces” and others splashed “shelf appeal” to news stands with flagrantly exaggerated artists renderings of what were actually real aircraft, but embellished with garish colors and in gallant poses. Thus, our selection of the title for this unique volume.
Many of the subjects in this catalog of sorts, arranged in an easy, alphabetical arrangement by manufacturer for the benefit of readers, are illustrated accurately and in fine detail for the very first time. Others correct previously published accounts which have been found to be in error.

There is, truly, something for everyone in this amazing combination of art and history. For devotee’s of the immortal Waco biplane series, for the first time, some order has been presented where heretofore numerous outrageous myths had gained currency. The legendary Curtiss and Curtiss-Wright stable is fully covered, and at last, some order has emerged from the chaos of previous accounts.

The author’s, in a unique collaboration, went to great lengths to authenticate the colors, markings and engineering details of each-and-every aircraft illustrated. In many instances, the colors used by the many national air arms cannot be conclusively linked to FSN standards, as locally produced paints were employed – often mixed, one time only, on the spot. When certainty could not be achieved, the authors also qualified their illustrations as “Provisional” often having had to reply on verbal or period, hand-written descriptions of the colors used. In the words of co-author Hagedorn, “these are real airplanes – with round engines, propellers and, usually, two wings.” The likes of which we will almost certainly never see again, but which once graced the azure skies of one of the world’s most diverse, and, during the decade of the 1930’s, poorly documented regions.
