This year’s anuall book from the Swedish Aviation History Society is about the Convair Metropolitan. This type of aircraft was a real workhorse for passenger traffic at SAS and Linjeflyg for about thirty years, from the 1950s onwards, until jets took over this role. The author is SFF’s Michael Sanz, who in 2020 published a book on the Caravelle in Sweden and the Nordic countries. These types of aircraft are indeed his speciality.
The book begins with chapters on the manufacturer Convair and their aircraft. Then there are chapters on the aircraft type in Finland, Sweden and Norway. The Swedish companies covered are of course SAS and Linjeflyg, but also ScanBee which had two machines. The final chapters deal with the Metropolitan as an embassy aircraft in Sweden and Finland, and with two serious air accidents in Sweden and Norway. The book concludes with a summary of all the aircraft individuals, a list of sources and a personal index.
